The form HERZOG FERDINAND goes back to tableware designs of classicism, which were based on antique models and can be traced back to FÜRSTENBERG from about 1765/70. The precursor form of HERZOG FERDINAND was created around 1780, and the reason for the change in style from opulent Rococo to strict classicism was the discovery of the simple life and the sober and noble designs of Greco-Roman antiquity.

Characteristic of HERZOG FERDINAND are the straight rising shapes and the geometric ornaments. The angular handles and the cylindrical shapes of jugs and cups are particularly typical, as are the stylized pine cones or acanthus flowers as lid knobs. The geometrically arranged relief decorations at the base of the pitcher snouts of DUKE FERDINAND, known as "Kanneluren", are also an element borrowed from antiquity. A special feature of FÜRSTENBERG and the HERZOG FERDINAND shape is the oval shape of the jugs.

The HERZOG FERDINAND shape was still produced by FÜRSTENBERG throughout the 19th century and remodelled in 1981 and supplemented with stylish articles designed for today's needs. HERZOG FERDINAND was named after Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, the brother of the founder of the porcelain manufactory FÜRSTENBERG, Duke Carl I. Duke Ferdinand was not only an important military man of his time, but also promoted art and culture in the spirit of the Enlightenment. He thus made a decisive contribution to the classicist design language of the ducal porcelain manufactory in Fürstenberg.
